Beijing 3rd Round
Interview
7th October 2010
Q.
You were able to hold serve throughout most of the match pretty
easily, especially during the second set, but it was in the tiebreak
when you weren't able to secure more than a few points. I was just
wondering what was happening in the tiebreaks that made you lose?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, first of all, I
feel I was a little tired today. I had a very tough week in Tokyo,
and coming to this event I was not really 100%, so I had a really
slow start in the beginning of the match.
I was down 5 2, was trying to fight and just, you know, find a way
to play. But, yeah, I was feeling pretty slow today. I did lots of
mistakes, and my reaction wasn't there, so I just gave such a big
advantage in the beginning of the game. I was not able to come back.

Beijing 2nd Round
Interview
5th October 2010
Q.
You played Kimiko Date in Stanford, almost three hours match. What's
the difference between these two matches?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: I think it was very important to play against her
before. I think it was a good experience, because the way she's
playing it's -- it's very different comparing to the other players.
She plays very flat, very quick. So you really need to get used to
this kind of game, and, you know, be ready for her.
I think she's an incredible athlete, and she's in very good shape.
It's never easy to play against her.
So today I was trying to be very focused because no matter what the
score is, she's fighting till the end. She can turn the game around
very quickly. So I was trying to be very concentrate and just play
till the end, until, you know, the last point.

Q.
Can you just talk about the way you felt you played today.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Um, I feel I had a very slow start, and I have
feeling that the center court is a bit faster than the outside
courts. Even with the warmup today on the center court, it really
took me some time to get used to the surface. So, yeah, I was able
to come back after 5 2, and that was the key to the match. I started
to play more aggressive match, and much better, started to play much
better tennis.

get into the game. Kimiko was playing very hard and flat, and I
can't remember the last time I played against someone with that
style of game. We had never played before. It's pretty amazing how
well she is playing and she is in great shape. She is very quick and
knows how to use her speed, so I was trying to play deep enough and
not go flat with her. I think sometimes it is good to play
three sets and go through some difficult moments like that. It was a
good fight. Maybe I wasn't playing at my best, but I was fighting

How did you feel like you played today? Just talk about the last couple of
months on clay and what's been happening with you?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, unfortunately I just didn't have a chance to have a
good preparation for the clay court season because of the Fed Cup, with
practicing, you know, hardcourt indoors. Trying to get ready for the Fed

It was really difficult to make this change, you know, and playing Rome and
Madrid, didn't have enough matches, you know, and it was very important
today to win in two sets. It's a different court, you know, pretty hot out
there and was very quick, so I'm just satisfied the way I was playing my

Indian Wells Quarter-Final Interview
17th March 2010
Q.
I know that Radwanska has done well against you in the past, but
what was the problem today?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Oh, well, I think I, you know, didn't play the way
I should be to beat her. I was, you know, playing actually her game
the way she feels pretty comfortable with the long rallies.
I feel I was not aggressive with my footwork, was not aggressive
with my shots today, so just way too many mistakes from me. And, I
mean, she was playing as usually. She was pretty solid on the
baseline, no mistakes.
I feel from the whole match I probably played maybe one or two games
the way I have to play to beat her, but it was not enough. You know,
I was just too slow with my footwork.

Just assess your level of play. You seem to be moving pretty well

game for me because she was playing like I expected her to play, you
know. She was very aggressive, hitting some flat balls, and it was
easy to get to the rhythm.
We played lots of times before and I knew what to expect from her,
so it was not a big problem today.

likes you a lot.

that's what makes it easier for me to come back each year.

Elena, you're now the official comeback queen of Coubertin after
those two difficult three-set matches. Do you feel extra motivation

the first. It hard because then, you have to find the way back to
victory and fight. But then of course, in the end, it's really
exciting to win. Melanie is a real fighter and I very much wanted to
win the match after her win against me at the U.S. Open. Also, I

easy match.

Your
serve was quite impressive. Are you satisfied with
it?

Yes, I felt comfortable on my first serve.

playing several good games with her, some of which were very close.

Sydney Quarter-Final Interview
13th January 2010
Q.
You've now won I think your last four meetings with Dinara. Why do
you think your game matches up so well to hers?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I mean, it's always good to have the
statistic, but I think every match is very different, especially
against Dinara. You never know what to expect. She's such a fighter.
Even today she had a slow start in the beginning of the match, but I
was ready for the game and ready for the fight. She never gives up,
and that's what happened today. She was pretty tough in the second
set, you know, after losing such an easy first set. I was ready for
the fight.

WTA Championships
Round Robin interview after win loss to Svetlana
Kuznetsova
30th October 2009
Q.
A disappointing loss, a tough loss when you had qualification in
your own hands.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yes, it's disappointing to finish the tournament
in this way. I wanted to win and advance to the semifinals but she
played well. She was very aggressive and returned a lot of balls and
went for everything. I think that I was playing aggressively enough,
but she ran a lot of balls down and hit with a lot of power.
Q. With Kuznetsova already out of
the tournament, did it surprise you how she played?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: She had no pressure and nothing to lose. Everyone
wants to win the last match and finish the season on a positive
note.
She was able to play with no pressure and play her own game.

Q.
Great comeback after you lost the first set. What was the turning
point or the key? You committed 15 unforced errors.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yes, I feel like I did a lot of unforced errors,
especially double-faults. But, you know, I was trying to fight for
every point. I was trying to stay positive. And I feel like before
the match I said to myself, I need a good start, you know, because
she has a great serve, she has a very powerful baseline game. So I
really need to get to the game as soon as possible.
I lost the first set very easily and I was down in the second set.
Yeah, it was very important to come back and to win this tiebreak.
So I think she was a little bit disappointed in the beginning of the
third set, gave me a little bit of an advantage, and I was able to
finish the match.

you feel maybe it's a little unfair or unlucky at this point?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, first of all, I don't compare myself

I think not to win a Grand Slam, it's not unfair and it's not
unlucky. It's just how it is. You know, you have to work hard if you
want to win it.

Interview
20th August 2009
Q.
What do you know about your opponent tomorrow? What would you look forward
to in tomorrow's game?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Samantha Stosur? Well, I play her in Australia and I lost
to her in French Open. But I think, you know, she has such a big weapon,
like a kick serve and the forehand is very powerful. So she's a very solid
player, you know, with big weapons in her game.
I think she improved a lot, so it's going to be tough match. I was watching
her against Svetlana in the first round. I think she was very impressive.
I'm just looking forward to this challenge.

Quarter-Final
Interview
14th August 2009
Q.
Your thoughts on your win today? Seemed like you were doing really
well with both your serve and service returns. You broke seven times
today.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, we had difficult time holding serve in the
beginning of the match. There was so many breaks. As soon as I was
able to hold my serve, I started to play more confident.
Just satisfied the way I was playing
the whole match. Played some tough matches against her in the past.
I think the tactic for today's match was different for me. I was
trying to stay aggressive and not play backhand crosscourt all the
time, you know, trying to mix it up, and it really worked.

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I think it was a very close match, and I
think we both were playing very well today. It was a good fight.

match point, should go down the line.

Quarter-Final Intervew
30th June 2009
Q. Second semifinal in a row. Probably you will play Serena. To
go one round further than last year, which areas do you feel you
need to be concentrating on?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I think it's a completely different
situation. For sure, it was a great experience being in the semis
last year. But this time I'm going to play a different player and
it's gonna be all new.
So I'm just thinking that, you know, I had some good matches so
far. And the most important for the next round will be to stay
focused and to stay playing aggressive on the court, and we'll see
if I can do it.

know, since last year.
I was expecting a tough match. But maybe she was a little bit
tired from playing against Cibulkova. It was a very close match,
three sets. I'm sure she didn't play her best today.

beginning of the match. So for me to come back just took a lot of
energy, and I wish I had a better start, and so it would be a
different game.

Charleston 3rd Round Interview
16th April 2009
Q.
First of all, could you just tell us how you felt the match went
today?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah. I think I played well. You know, I was very
aggressive. I was focused all the way, which is important when
you're winning easily, and I'm satisfied, you know. I think she was
a little bit nervous, did a lot of mistakes, but I was trying to be
focused on my game and trying to attack all the time. It really
worked today.
Q. Can I get your reaction to Venus losing earlier today?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I didn't watch the match. I just saw some of
the beginning of the match, because I was playing next. And from
what I saw, Sabine was playing really well today. And what can I
say? The competition is pretty tough. You have to be ready from the
first round, because it's not going to be easy now, especially
playing on clay court, first tournament. You really have to be
patient and take some time before you really feel the surface.

fun. Absolutely two different dogs, two different characters,
but I just love them."
2. LINUS HAS HER BLANKET, ELENA HAS HER BIRD

which was given to me by my parents when I was born. I always

to them?

just made it up.
Q. On a day like today, it's a hard day. What positive can you take
away that you can apply to the next tournament, next match? Do you
learn something on a day like today that you can think about next
time?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: I'm sure every time you lose you're trying to
learn something. I just feel like I probably shouldn't come here
because I played a lot of the matches in the beginning of the year
and I just needed you know, just to take some time off and get ready
and recovery.
So, yeah, I didn't have enough time, so just, you know, will think
about it and just make some changes for the next tournament.

It was obviously a very long and tight match. Do you feel that
you've missed your chances in the first set, and that could have
been a different story if you had won the first set?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yes, I think I had some opportunity in the first
set, 5-4 serving for the set. And also in the tie-breaker, it was a
very close set.
I don't know if it changed something in the game, because I think I
played really well today. And, you know, she never gives up. So I
don't think, you know, it wouldn't be any easier for me. But for me
I missed some chances in the beginning.

Paris Quarter-Final
Interview
13th February 2009
Q.
It seems that you took the good habit of winning your match in two
sets now, because you had the reputation before to be the queen of
the three setters and the long match. How can you say that you
improved of going early in the match?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, I think I used to have a slow start, you
know, most of the time. And today my focus was in the beginning of
the game. Because I know she's a very experienced player, and she
played a very solid match last night.
So it was strange to get ready and start from the first point, to be
aggressive, to take the advantage. You know, just dictate it in the
game.
So, yeah, I'm very satisfied with the way I was playing from the
beginning to the end, just the whole match.

confident for the rest of the Open GDF SUEZ?

DEMENTIEVA:
Yes, it was definitely a good test for me.
Anastasia is a strong player and the first set was very close and
disputed, it's the type of match I was epxecting to work on my
confidence and get in a great rhythm. Hopefully, that will prove to
be useful for tomorrow.

what did you think of her game?
ELENA
DEMENTIEVA:
She very talented, that's for sure, and

Paris Pre-Tournament
Interview
10th February 2009
Q.
You got off to a good start, you won in Oakland and Brisbane then
you reached the semifinals in Melbourne. What is the reason for such
a good start? Did you train harder during the winter break?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, first of all, I didn't play in Brisbane.
Yes, I had a different preparation. I was practicing in the states,
and I spent almost five weeks there. So I think that the preparation
was a little bit different this time. And it's really helped me to
adjust for the weather conditions and playing in Australia.
So I think also playing a small tournament in the beginning of the
year gives me a lot of confidence. So I was able to play much better
next week, and play with a lot of confidence during the Australian
Open.

Sydney
Final Interview
16th January 2009
Q.
A few hiccups in the second set, but a perfect start to the year
otherwise?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I think, you know, in the second set Dinara
put lots of pressure on me and I was playing too defensively. So
instead of continuing to play very aggressively like I did in the
first set, I just think I was waiting for her mistakes to come, and
that was not a good idea.
So, I mean, I was able to change somehow, you know, the situation in
the third set, and that break in the beginning of the set really
helped me during the third set.

Q.
Congratulations with your victory! What can you say about todays
match? You announced more than once that you don’t like to play your
compatriots, didn’t you?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Thank you. I didn’t say, that I don’t like to
play our tennis players, it’s mostly journalists suggestions, as for
me I don’t care. Moreover I had to get used to it long ago as five
tennis players in top ten are Russians that’s why it can happen at
any gross match. As for today's match it wasn’t easy at all, there
were many emotions. And when emotions come into the game it’s rarely
influences on the level of tennis positively. And what a gripping
tie-break at the end! It was a very difficult match.

happened? What was going on in your mind at the time?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, I just feel like I did too many unforced

So she was trying to do everything, and I just was trying to go for
the winner and couldn't make it.
I feel like it was a good run, you know. Like I won 12 matches in a
row. I mean, just feel little tired today. I couldn't play my best.

But the way she was playing in Beijing was unbelievable, because
she beat so many great players, like Svetlana. The quality of the
tennis that she was able to produce was unbelievably amazing.
So, well, but there is one more match to play, you know, before,

Wimbledon
Semi-Final
Interview
3rd July 2008
Q.
That first set, what were you thinking when you came out and Venus
was playing like that?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I expected, you know, such a good game
from her because she's the defending champion. Well, I think she
started really well. You know, in the beginning of the match she
really dominated, put a lot of pressure on my serve. You know, she
was serving unbelievably well, so it was really hard to just make
her play.

Wimbledon 3rd Round
Interview
28th June 2008
Q.
Could I just ask a rather stupid and simple question. What happened
in those first four games?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I felt like I had a really slow start in
the beginning. I've played a couple times against Gisela before, and
I never beat her. So maybe today in the beginning I felt a little
bit nervous and couldn't get, you know, my game in the way. After
Love 4 I just decided not to think about the score, just to play
every single point and be focused on the game; I feel like I already
lost this set. I was trying to fight until the end, and I felt like
it was a little bit lucky at the end of the first set, but it was
really a big fight to win the first set.

Roland Garros 4th
Round Interview
2nd June 2008
Q.
Helps to have experience at the Grand Slams, huh? Second set not so
good, and the third set you started to play your game again.
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, what I think that really helped me, the
match that we play in Charleston in the semifinals. I think it was a
tough match, but I learned my lesson.
Today on the court when I lost the second set I was trying to stay
more positive, more aggressive with her, because I know she's a
great clay court player. You don't want to go too much rally with
her, because she's moving so well.
And, well, I think, you know, especially in the third set I was able
to step into the court and, you know, hit really hard. To read

Elena wins Dubai!
1st March 2008
Elena
claimed her ninth WTA Tour singles title in Dubai, beating
countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova in the night-time final, 4-6 6-3 -62.
Elena came out slowly versus world No.2 Kuznetsova in the final,
dropping the first two games of the match and eventually the first
set, but the fighting spirit that has helped her claw her way back so
many times in the past rose from the ashes once again and she would
concede only five more games the rest of the way, eventually notching
the three set championship victory over her fellow Russian.
"I think I was playing wrong tactically in the first set; I was
hitting the ball too short," Elena said. "I realized I had to move her
around more and not just stay back and hit crosscourt, and I had to
step in more and go for my forehand winners. I became more aggressive
and it worked. It was a great match and I was playing really well,
probably my best match in a long time."
"The whole week I had such a bad draw; this tournament is really
popular and so everyone had it like that, but I'm just happy I was
able to play my best at the end of the week," Elena said. "In the past
I was playing Paris and Antwerp and so I didn't make it here, but I
heard so many good things about it from the other players and I came
this year. And I have no regrets!" |
